The History of the Hasbrouck Heights Men’s Association:
With help from former President Mike Pendergast and former Secretary John Pirilli.
By Justin Watrel
The Hasbrouck Heights Men’s Association was founded from its noble beginnings back in the 1960’s by originating from the Hasbrouck Heights branch of the Jaycees, a national organization of men who did volunteer work for their towns. The Junior Chamber of Commerce of Hasbrouck Heights was involved in many charitable events to raise money for programs in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.
The Hasbrouck Heights Men’s Association was founded in the Fall of 1979. The age limit to be a member of the Jaycees was 36 and it seemed that almost the entire membership had reached 35 at the time. So, the current membership decided to start a men’s club where there was no limitation.
The membership met at member Bobby Ciavaglia’s house and voted to start a new organization called the Hasbrouck Heights Men’s Association. The original members were members Dick Tort, Bobby Ciavaglia, Gerry Morano, Charlie Lentini, John Jerome, Steve Bizik, Bob Mitchel, Chuck Carlino, Rodger Bernhammer, Ed Chermark, and John Perilli.
Member Dick Tort was the first president of the organization, and the first project of the new founded HHMA was to continue the Christmas Tree sales. The Jaycees had started this in 1961 and was one of the most successful fundraisers. Some of the other early projects included running Punt, Pass and Kick in conjunction with Pasquin Ford. The organization also held after school basketball leagues and ran a Junior Olympics.
In the current years since we have participated in town events including the Health Department’s Five K run, the Annual Beefsteak fundraiser, the Annual Golf Outing, which is one of our biggest fundraisers and new events like the Halloween Home Decorating Contest, which is good community outreach and of course our biggest fundraiser of the year is the Annual Christmas tree sales.
We want to thank all former members for the work they did dedicating themselves to the founding and the growing of this great organization and to the men who volunteer today who give a lot of their free time to helping raiser funds for the Hasbrouck Heights Scholarship Fund which benefits so many deserving high school seniors in Hasbrouck Heights NJ.
We are also always looking for new members to join our growing organization.
